Randi M. Cruz, daughter of Sue and Randy Smith of Jackson, visited Rashid Pediatric Therapy Center in Dubai with crew from the USS Carl Vinson during a Persian Gulf deployment. The 130 children ages 3 to 15 with various disabilities benefited as Cruz and shipmates read, played, and taught at the center aboard the carrier homeported in Bremerton Washington. Cruz, a 1999 Silver Bluff High School graduate, joined the Navy in August 2001.
