President Bush urged tougher penalties for corporate criminals and a crackdown on boardroom scandals in a Wall Street speech. He promised to end cooking the books shading the truth and breaking laws, signaling a tougher administration stance on corporate crime.
Violence continues as a Palestinian gunman fired at Israeli police in Jerusalem and an Islamic militant was killed in a West Bank gunbattle while leaders from both sides met for a second day of talks reflecting diverging conflict trends.

Democratic candidate Alex Sanders rejects that his Dixiecrat label targeted Strom Thurmond. He says the line was to debunk Southern stereotypes and notes Thurmond has not been a Dixiecrat for decades. Thurmond's office and Jeffery support Sanders’ explanation.
