Ace known as Aco, a 50 year old carpenter in Kalam village 1000 miles northeast of Jakarta, reportedly has never worn clothing since birth. Kompas quoted him saying clothes cause severe itching and a neighbor recalling his protest as a baby. A doctor said he is physically and mentally healthy.
Ralph Ferrara tried to pass a live bobcat as a dead ocelot to mislead authorities. Daisy the bobcat growled, exposing the ruse as ASPCA officers described the 30 pound animal and the staged cremation certificate and sympathy card.

Senator Strom Thurmond praised a federally funded study that concludes building a heavy water breeder reactor at the Savannah River Plant would save 400 to 700 million dollars versus sites in Washington or Idaho. The Energy Research Advisory Board found heavy water tech best for tritium production and quickest capacity given existing Savannah facilities and staff.
The Senate approved the Energy and Water Resources Appropriations bill allocating 1.6 billion dollars to the Savannah River Plant for the 1989 fiscal year. The package also funds water navigation projects and a cancer center at MUSC, cited as vital to South Carolina’s growth and health access.
Rescuers pulled a woman from the debris after 15 hours trapped in the three story La Tienda Amigo store collapse in Brownsville Texas. At least 11 people were killed and 43 injured with five others missing.
The June civilian unemployment rate dropped to 5.3 percent, the lowest since 1974, as employment rose by 820,000 with youths 16 to 24 accounting for most of the gain. Teen unemployment fell 2.0 points to 13.6 percent.
Aiken eyed a residential construction boom as SRP plans a contractor change expected next year bringing hundreds of new Savannah River Plant employees. Westinghouse or Martin Marietta offer about 300 new jobs, with a reactor project possible by July 31.
Oil spilled into the Savannah River near North Augusta is mostly cleaned up and water-use restrictions have been lifted. City Clerk Leona Louis said the bulk of the oil is cleared, with 220 gallons having leaked from an SCE&G hydroelectric plant upstream. Crews will mop up remaining residue through the weekend and a boom stays in the river to gather any lingering oil.
