South Carolina Election Commission plans 2012 presidential primary
The South Carolina Election Commission says it will have plans for the first in the South presidential primary by October. Funding and fate were in doubt after a veto but the Legislature overrode it and the attorney general says the commission can run the primary and bill the state Republican Party. The cost is about 1.5 million dollars with 680000 potential from 2010 funds. GOP has raised 160000 so far and expects up to six more candidate filing fees of 35000 each.

Burning ban extends in northeastern South Carolina
Fire officials extended a burning ban in northeastern counties east of Columbia and north of Charleston as drought and heat strain crews. The red flag warning remains in much of the state while several weekend blazes in Horry County drew crews from across South Carolina.

South Carolina infant mortality falls for fourth straight year
DHEC reports the 2009 infant mortality rate at 7.1 per 1000 live births, down from 8.0 in 2008 and 9.5 in 2005, crediting health providers church groups and the March of Dimes for the ongoing decline. Leading causes remain congenital malformations and prematurity. improvements cited include fewer accidental suffocations in beds and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome cases.

Suspicious Charleston Fires Under Review
Fire officials investigate two suspicious downtown Charleston fires that may link to about 50 other fires in the area since 2002. Fire Marshal Mike Jalazadeh said one porch was set last week and another home four blocks away four hours earlier is under probe. The fires had ceased after August 2009.
