Holdover status puts many South Carolina magistrates under Senate control
A State probe shows 107 of 314 magistrates or 34 percent are on holdover status after four year terms, allowing state senators to fire them at will. Critics call it a conflict of interest as magistrates handle minor criminal and civil cases while salaries range from 33868 to 70962 dollars. Chief Justice Toal questions pressure on the judiciary though no known abuse is cited.
