Bettye Parks tearfully recalls her son Charles H Parks Jr killed in Vietnam on Aug 21, 1969 as they read his name at The Wall That Heals opening at Citizens Park. Early morning head on collision between a Wagener man’s westbound truck and a Mazda pickup killed two Aiken County men, Melvin W Belcher and Thomas J Spires, as the Mazda burst into flames. Howard M McNair, driver of the GMC, survived with non life threatening injuries. Investigators from the state accident reconstruction team are reviewing the case with no charges filed yet.
The City of Aiken Design Review Board unanimously approved demolishing four aging structures at the Aiken Training Track including a 1920s era Post Barn. The new concrete block barn will house 59 stalls eight feed rooms six tack rooms and a half bath with gray paint and white trim to match existing buildings.
