Man charged in rape case in Aiken linked DNA to felon

Police tied DNA from a July 4 sexual assault in east Aiken to DNA from a felon living in Aiken County. Atheanis K. Elliott, 46, faces charges including first degree burglary and criminal sexual conduct. Elliott was previously convicted of felonies but not registered as a sex offender. ARREST, page 7A.

Wall That Heals opens as families honor Vietnam fallen

Bettye Parks tearfully recalls her son Charles H Parks Jr killed in Vietnam on Aug 21, 1969 as they read his name at The Wall That Heals opening at Citizens Park. The Parks family shared memories with Mike Company veterans who described Chuck’s death in a Quang Nam firefight and his kindness, while Rudnick noted the healing effect of revisiting the loss during the four day exhibit.

Two Die in Fiery Wagener Crash on SC 302

Early morning head on collision between a Wagener man’s westbound truck and a Mazda pickup killed two Aiken County men, Melvin W Belcher and Thomas J Spires, as the Mazda burst into flames. Howard M McNair, driver of the GMC, survived with non life threatening injuries. Investigators from the state accident reconstruction team are reviewing the case with no charges filed yet.

Aiken Training Track to Replace Four Deteriorating Barns

The City of Aiken Design Review Board unanimously approved demolishing four aging structures at the Aiken Training Track including a 1920s era Post Barn. The new concrete block barn will house 59 stalls eight feed rooms six tack rooms and a half bath with gray paint and white trim to match existing buildings.
