Beech Island Fire Department responded to a residential fire near Bell Drive to Beech Island around 3:30 AM on Thursday. One adult was injured. Red Cross provides financial assistance for food clothing and essentials plus comfort kits. Officials investigate cause.

A North Augusta man linked to the Jeish Travelers and a Texas couple were indicted in a federal court on charges of using the mail to defraud insurers. They allegedly obtained life policies on a Texas woman fatally stabbed in 2014 for insurance payouts. The trio faces counts of mail fraud and conspiracy with arraignment occurring after an June 20 indictment.
Excavation began July 3 for Saltstone Disposal Unit 7 at Savannah River Site. SRR leads the project with DOE approval. Excavation will run through summer with 20 feet of soil removal and 178000 cubic yards of ground to form a new four story, football-field long concrete tank designed for low level waste.
