Marines Play at Hopeland Gardens in Summer Concert

About 2,000 people gathered at Hopeland Gardens for a United States Marine Corps Band performance as part of the Hopeland Gardens Summer Concert Series. Lisa Hall of the Aiken Parks and Recreation Department called it the biggest crowd yet, while attendees stayed cool with fans and enjoyed picnic setups as the band of around 50 musicians performed.

Heat wave south Carolina feels cooler than DC and Philly

Inland counties in the Pee Dee faced a heat advisory while most of South Carolina posted barely above average temperatures. Beaufort hit 100 and Columbia 95 with Charleston at 98. Forecasters cited a sea breeze keeping SC cooler than other East Coast cities and noted a lingering cooling trend before a new heat advisory.

Fourth of July 1998 Deadliest for South Carolina Roads

The Fourth of July weekend saw at least 17 deaths on South Carolina highways, a record for the state. Victims included a 10-year-old boy and a newborn girl, with several crashes in Barnwell and Aiken counties. Authorities cited seatbelt use and restraint failures in several fatal head on collisions, including a crash on U.S. 278 east of Barnwell that involved Raesean Teasley and Micalah Priester.

Wild Wild West tops Fourth of July box office chase

The Will Smith western sci fi thriller led the holiday weekend with 36.8 million in its opening, while Big Daddy dropped to second with 26.4 million. Tarzan earned 19.2 million and South Park opened at 14.8 million amid stricter R rating enforcement. Summer of Sam stood eighth with 7.8 million as the market grew 16 percent versus 1998.
