Robert Murphy a 50 year old former Marine assists non traditional students on the USC Aiken campus and plans to expand outreach. In the nation s capital region Independence Day celebrations follow nearly a week of a widespread blackout causing millions to endure 90 plus degree heat.
Hundreds marked Independence Day at the Gaston Livery on Richland Avenue with music by Preston and Weston. Activities for all included inflatables and a corn hole and watermelon seed spitting contest. Jonathan Hutto dressed in 1770s attire and carried a copy of the Declaration. Eight year old Matthew Rickman read part of the Declaration before joining the event. The boy said the Fourth means celebration of fun.
A majority of economists in the AP Economy Survey say unemployment will stay above 6 percent for at least four more years, with 8 percent projected on Election Day. They warn the job market remains weak after May hiring slumped to 69,000 and the Great Recession ended in 2009.
