Testing Of Bear Begins Tomorrow In Aiken

A black bear shot near Aiken is stored at the Savannah River forest service for rabies testing. A Clemson biologist will check the skin and the skull goes to the health department while officials assess legal action for the shooting. Public danger is deemed minimal and the bear’s arrival is tied to mating season.

Voc Rehab Funding Gets Panel Approval

The Ways and Means Committee approves 1.6 million for Aiken County including 586000 for a new vocational rehabilitation center and 539000 for USC Aiken. Also funds design for a library addition and planning for a new USDA arts center as part of a 145 million capital bill. Cain urges continuation of state local vocational matching for high schools.

Council Postpones Sewer Fee Action in North Augusta

North Augusta City Council postponed action on an ordinance restructuring sewage fees after three members were absent. Citizen Sallie Bussey of the Aiken County Property Owner's Council protested the charge for unused city sewer service.

Aiken Council Addresses Sewer Billing and New Ordinances

The council voted to bill all eligible residents for sewer service to fund the wastewater plant and discussed a misleading fee dispute. They approved four ordinances including park care, false burglar alarm penalties, annexation for Triangle Plaza, and sale of old lighting gear to Augusta Christian Schools for $2000.

Diane Toole Surrenders Miss South Carolina Crown Saturday

Greenville pageant will crown a new Miss South Carolina Saturday live on WJBF-TV at 9 p.m. Diane Toole of Aiken will relinquish the title to the 1980 winner. Donna Axum Miss America 1964 returns as mistress of ceremonies with Jim Wilkins, Pam and Richard Bailey, and Bill Brown providing entertainment.
