The offices of the Aiken Standard will be closed on Wednesday July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The newspaper will be published and delivered as usual that day, and the business office will reopen on Thursday at 8:30 am.

Rivera pleads innocent in Augusta murder case

Reinaldo J. Rivera, a 37 year old North Augusta man, pleaded innocent in a Richmond County Georgia courtroom to charges of rape and murder. A Monday hearing addressed motions on the admissibility of his taped confessions from October 2000 as the judge reviewed pre trial procedures for the death penalty. The garbled audio captured Rivera’s late statements to investigators about several killings.

Patriotic concert by Parris Island Band at Hopelands Gardens

York Mayor to go to trial over 1969 race riot death

York Pennsylvania mayor Charlie Robertson and five other white men face trial for the death of black woman Lillie Belle Allen during the city’s 1969 race riots. A Common Pleas judge ruled there is enough evidence for trial and noted that proof of a crime and probable cause exist.

Judge trims sentence after pleas from rapist

Circuit Judge James R. Barber III cuts a third from a 21 year term given to Aiken teen Lawrence J. Perea II 19 for kidnapping burglary and rape. Perea convicted April 19, the sentence drops to 14 years with a 10 12 year prison stay unless a new trial is won at a June 15 hearing.

Summer Food Site program feeds thousands in Aiken County

The 2001 Summer Food Site program runs at 54 locations across Aiken County, providing free breakfast and lunch to children during summer. Operated by the Department of Social Services with federal funds, the effort is sponsored by the Aiken County Council and linked to the free reduced lunch program. About 2,800 lunches a day are served, though sites are fewer this year. Sponsors note strong demand and a promotional video for the statewide program. Sites include Aiken Beech Island Graniteville Horse Creek Valley Jackson New Ellenton North Augusta Ridge Spring Monetta Wagener Valley.
