The offices of the Aiken Standard will be closed Monday July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The Monday edition will be published and delivered on its normal schedule and all offices will reopen Tuesday July 5 at 8 30 a.m.
Winthrop University president Anthony DiGiorgio says state leaders may force rethink of higher education pay raise plans after Gov Carroll Campbell vetoed more than 8.2 million dollars. DiGiorgio estimates a 350 thousand to 400 thousand dollar loss and notes a potential fire storm as universities reconsider a proviso requiring 20 percent of employee pay raise costs.
Clemson AP report says the U.S. EPA rejected a Lake Hartwell fish fence intended to block migratory fish between the contaminated 12 Mile Creek arm and the rest of the lake. Instead, EPA will pursue a cheaper approach focused on public education about PCB risks from eating fish.

Western South Carolina congressional candidates show driving violations per state records. Bob Cantrell has two license suspensions and six speeding tickets. Lindsey Graham has eight speeding tickets in six years. Ed Allgood has four speeding violations since 1985, Dorn Pracht one speeding violation in 1987. Other Democrats Jim Bryan, Tommy Moore, and Lou Bracknell have no violations.
A USAir DC-9 on approach to Charlotte Douglas International Airport crashed during a thunderstorm killing at least 18 of 55 aboard. The jet struck telephone poles, involved 33 hospitalized, six unaccounted. Flight 1016 had departed Columbia, SC, and was unable to land on the first approach amid low visibility.
Aiken County will begin installing a large information system to place data on land buildings roads schools and owners at citizens fingertips. County Administrator William Shepherd calls it a citizens information system built over three years. The Fiscal 1994 95 budget provides about $305 000 as the first payment on a $1 million project. The map based daybank will aid construction land development public safety emergency preparedness taxation and more.
Springfield Salley mayor Stillinger pushes for toll free telephone service linking Salley and Springfield with Aiken and Orangeburg. He has sent letters to chambers, city halls, counties, state offices, lawmakers, public service boards, and the federal government to gain attention and change the current long distance charges.
