He says the drug scene remains active and dealers have reorganized to stay in business. He notes accessibility to cocaine persists and stresses constant hard‑nosed work to suppress drugs.
Thirty nine exhausted American hostages freed from Beirut arrived at Wiesbaden West Germany for medical and psychiatric checkups. They were welcomed by relatives and a cheering crowd at Force Hospital with banners reading Welcome Back to Freedom. Spokesman Captain Jay Coupe said they are in good spirits despite fatigue and would not be silent about their experience.
Vice President Bush and Barbara Bush welcomed the freed hostages upon their return from Beirut. He condemned the terrorists and vowed the United States would fight back. The hostages, including one from Waldorf, left Damascus after months captivity and planned a day of rest before returning home.
SARAH OKESON reports on Camp Burnt Gin a longtime Sumter County summer camp for handicapped children. About 400 will attend this summer including 14 from Aiken County. Director Lane Pellett notes activities like swimming and softball while families recall the camp’s supportive atmosphere.
The Aiken County Council will consider asking the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation to accelerate widening of Silver Bluff Road. The panel meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the council building at 736 Richland Ave. W. in Aiken and will also review an ordinance to establish a road project.
