The US economy grew 4.3 percent in the October-December quarter, the fastest pace since the 1980s. Full-year GDP rose 3.8 percent in 1997 with inflation at 1.5 percent for the quarter, marking the strongest growth in nearly a decade and the mildest inflation since the mid 1960s.

Monica Lewinsky’s attorney William Ginsburg challenged Linda Tripp’s account that Tripp heard Lewinsky on a 2 am call with President Clinton. State Democratic Party Chairman Ronnie Maxwell said he will resign in February to allow a new leader to be chosen before the November elections. He had previously said he would quit in May, but the party will fill the unexpired term at the Feb. 17 meeting.
Columbia Governor Beasley aims to cut video gambling revenue from the state budget while lawmakers debate a near even split on funding. House leaders differ with Beasley on excluding or preserving the $61 million in license fees as budget decisions proceed. Some support keeping the money for one time items. others back an outright ban or gambling free plan.
Aiken Electric Cooperative's board voted a $500 000 rate cut effective March 1, cutting bills by roughly 10 to 14 dollars per month for about 85 500 customers across five surrounding counties. CEO Gary Stooksbury framed the move as part of a two year strategy to maintain low costs amid potential deregulation and competition with SCE&G.
