Phelon plant killer Wise found guilty of four murders

A Beaufort County jury convicted Arthur Hastings Wise on four counts of murder after a Septem ber 1997 shooting spree at the RE Phelon industrial plant. The verdict, read in a quiet courtroom, could lead to a death sentence. The jury also found Wise guilty on three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill as witnesses recounted a day of horror. The fate phase begins Wednesday as defense argues lack of malice and seeks life without parole.

Beaufort County Jury Convicts Arthur Hastings Wise

The Beaufort County Jury found Arthur Hastings Wise guilty in under an hour after the prosecution rested and the defense offered no witnesses. Wise was convicted of four murders, three counts of assault with intent to kill, four weapons charges, and one second degree burglary count.

Jury to start penalty phase after break in SC trial

After a one day break the jury will begin the penalty phase of the trial on Wednesday. Under South Carolina law a defendant who faces death has the right to present witnesses evidence and testimony to show mitigating circumstances in hopes of avoiding the death penalty in favor of a life sentence.

Recycling in Aiken Third in a series of three

North Augusta has run a seven year program and now handles recyclables for much of Aiken County. Through contracts with Aiken and the Savannah River Site, the North Augusta MRF processed about 20 000 tons of material last year. Residents are asked to use blue bags to place all mixed recyclables for pickup.

Third suspect surrenders in South Carolina abduction case

AUGUSTA The third suspect in the 1998 disappearance of a Sam's Club manager found dead in South Carolina turned himself in. Ronald Coleman Jr. was charged with kidnapping armed robbery burglary hijacking a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm during a crime. He was booked at the Richmond County Law Enforcement Center after surrendering at 5:30 p.m.

No Miss Aiken County Contests Miss South Carolina Pageant

With a March 3 deadline near, Aiken County may not be represented in the Miss South Carolina pageant this year as no one has volunteered to take over the franchise. Executive director Joseph Sanders notes strong local interest but no takers while time remains to stage a pageant.
