Congress approved 36 million dollars in November for technology transfer and economic development in Aiken and four other counties in South Carolina and Georgia. Of this, 6 million targets economic adjustment for Aiken Barnwell Allendale and two Georgia counties, with 1 million already funding the Savannah River Regional Diversification Initiative. The 30 million funds technology transfer at Savannah River Site. Both sums were approved November 10 under the 1994 Defense Authorization Bill.
Otis Storey, 42, was arrested on a murder charge after allegedly shooting Brian Dorsey, 23, at 2795 Old Camp Long Road following a day or two of staying with Storey. Dorsey died from head wounds after the Friday night incident. sheriff’s Lt. Tim Hoffman noted the two were friends who had a dispute.
A 6 30 p m Monday meeting at Midland Valley High School will address a long running dispute between two water districts over Pine Log and Storm Branch Road areas. Rep James Roland Smith has proposed a bill to move 350 customers from Valley Public Service Authority back to Beech Island Rural Community Water District. The VPSA protests the bill and seeks defeat in the Senate. Water rights tensions prompted the WPSA commissioner Glenda Wilson to resign. Don Groves of VPSA says lawsuits were needed to curb encroachment into Aiken North Augusta and Bee Island.
