Asylum seeker numbers hit new high in Switzerland
Geneva AP reports Switzerland saw a 47 percent rise in asylum seekers to a record 35,836 last year. Turkey accounted for one fifth, Yugoslavians and Lebanese 15 percent each, Sri Lankans 13 percent. So far this year 43,000 have applied, mainly from Yugoslavia. Refugee crowding spurs talk of reinforcing border police with army units. 8 were granted refugee status. 4,879 given temporary residence for humanitarian reasons. 57,910 applications still pending from prior years. Non-Swiss make up 16 percent of Switzerland’s 6.7 million population.

Council was told that more than $3 million borrowed from the capital projects bond fund and $210,000 from a depreciation fund must be restored promptly.
