Chief justice warns SC court funding growing unstable
Chief Justice Jean Toal told the state Bar convention that South Carolina courts rely increasingly on fines and fees for funding. She noted 1999 2000 funding was 41 million from state appropriations and 57 million budget this year includes about 15 million from penalties. She urged General Assembly to bolster funding, hire three new circuit and family court judges, and discussed a planned pay study with results possible by February.
