ADPS Safety tips to curb property crimes

Property from 1a Safety tips ADPS offers this list of things citizens can do to help prevent property crimes. Don’t leave valuable items in your car even when it is locked. Lock anything of value in your trunk. When you get home take your things inside. Lock your car. Get a car alarm. With recent technology they can be purchased at a relatively nominal cost and they can help prevent car thefts. Be aware. If you see someone break into a car call the police right away. Take mental notes and try to get a license plate number and description of the getaway car. Notice details like a dented fender or unmatched paint. Remember a physical description of the perpetrator. If you see someone loitering go to a phone and call 911. There may be nothing wrong but officers say they would rather find out there is nothing wrong than miss a crime in progress. Other targets besides purses are CD players and CDs. Once it was eight track tapes now CD players and cellular phones. They will take anything from wrapped Christmas presents to television sets and computer equipment. Leather jackets appeal to this thief. Prevention and awareness are two things citizens can help with. The respect for property is not what it used to be. It has some home to Aiken and we all need to protect ourselves. The Public Safety Department cleared 43 car break-in cases with about 20 to 25 arrests in 1996 and 49 auto theft cases were cleared by arrests last year. We expect arrests to rise in 1997 as offenses increase.
