The Aiken Sulky Races, first leg of the Triple Crown of Racing, will now be held March 31 instead of March 10. Manager Sandy Priester cites severe winter weather and trainers working mostly with 2 year olds as reasons for the shift. Trainers had requested the later date and it could become the regular schedule.
Rod Shealy mails a letter to Rep. Irene K. Rudnick offering his services as campaign manager. Rudnick plans to oppose Shealy’s father Sen. Ryan Shealy for the District 24 Senate seat. Shealy will also run his father’s campaign.
Telecommunications Systems Inc. TSI plans to start service Sunday in Aiken with rates about 27 percent lower than Southern Bell and AT&T direct dial. The South Carolina firm charges 50 for businesses and 10 for residents with no minimum use or contracts. TSI serves Columbia and other cities and will lease equipment in smaller areas. The firm projects electronic mail teleconferencing and TV transmission and has an agreement to have long distance charges included in monthly Southern Bell bills.
The Golden Fleece Awards led by Senator William Proxmire highlight alleged federal waste since 1975. The January issue cites NASA spending 780 000 on VIP trips, with public tips guiding selections and aides collecting evidence before Proxmire’s final decision.
The NAACP plans to seek a federal injunction to halt the June 12 Senate primaries over reapportionment disputes. Dr William F Gibson says lawyers will file with a three judge panel next week to prevent electing senators under the current lines.
Gov. Dick Riley signed a six year effort to seal open beer and wine containers in moving vehicles with penalties up to 100 dollars or 30 days jail. The law aligns open container rules for beer and wine with hard liquor, amid public outrage over drunken driving deaths and injuries.
Atlanta firm Royal Crown Co. directors back Posner leveraged buyout offer of 40 dollars per share unless a better bid appears by February 10. Posner controls about 28 percent of Royal Crown’s 8.2 million shares and has pressed court action over a separate 37 a share bid.
