Aiken County educators study a federal privacy law protecting student records. Superintendent T B Willis says policies are being rewritten to comply with the Protection of the Rights and Privacy of Parents and Students while informing parents about the new rules.
Le Duc Tho, North Vietnam’s negotiator of the ceasefire, accuses the Ford administration of steering the war toward new aid for Saigon. South Vietnamese pilots report two A37 bombers downed by North Vietnamese missiles west of Saigon near the Cambodian frontier. Tho also calls for Thieu’s overthrow, saying he has scrapped the Paris agreement.
President Ford's $16 billion tax cut is under sharper review by the House Ways and Means Committee as antirecession measures draw renewed criticism. The panel resumes hearings on the proposal, after pausing to consider a bill to delay Cord's $3 import oil levy by 90 days.
Greek anti American demonstrators attempted to set fire to a car carrying two U S naval officers who had landed on Corfu during a protest against the destroyer Richard E Byrd visit. Police rescued the officers and returned them to the destroyer. One officer said they were nearly lynched though no confirmation was available.
Federal investigators will review flight tapes to determine why a twin engine plane carrying five people struck a college radio tower and crashed onto the American University campus. Victims include Edgar T. Wolfe Jr. Columbus Dispatch chairman, Frederick W. Leveque Columbus businessman, Carlton Dargusch Jr. Columbus lawyer, pilots Robert D. Hatem and Richard White, both of Columbus.
California physicians report that illegally imported Chinese herbal medicines caused agranulocytosis in four patients, including one fatal case, in a JAMA article. Middle aged and elderly non Chinese patients used the remedies for arthritis and back pain. The drugs carried no identifying warning on their packaging.
Charles S. Bird Jr. announced that Helping Hands Inc. will benefit from this year’s Aiken Hunt Meet to be held March 22. The Aiken County Board of Commissioners discusses a 12 month lease with Satcher Motor Co for 35 patrol cars at 290 a month. The ruling fuels conflict over whether the sheriff or the board controls spending and bidding. The vote 5 to 2 favored staying with Satcher and the 12 month bid despite calls to renegotiate or reopen bidding.
A report of the dismissal of county bookkeeper Rhea Burgess is untrue. Burgess has held the post since 1973 and will remain in it. County Administrator Thomas F Williams and Finance Director James A Donovan deny any firing and cite communication problems resolved after an executive session. Burgess previously served 15 years as chief clerk in the county treasurer's office.
Police will distribute thousands of flyers in Wall Street seeking information about the Fraunces Tavern Anglers Club annex bombing that killed four and injured about forty Friday. Investigators appeal for tips as the case draws public attention in New York.
Rita Faucett, a petite Aiken High junior with a pixie haircut, won the Junior Miss title at the weekend pageant. She scored highly in talent appearance poise and scholastic ability, performing piano as her talent. The event was sponsored by the Aiken Jaycees and hosted by president John D. Surles.
