Alley facelift progress in Aiken plans and funding outlined

City engineer George Grinton says The Alley in downtown Aiken is moving from concept to design with requests for proposals sent and due mid February. The project, estimated at 1.25 million, would trench underground lines and improve drainage, lighting, and landscaping while preserving vehicle access.

Mid-life crisis project earns historic award in Aiken

Heather Sargent turned 45 in 2012 and chose a wild project by buying and renovating Newberry Cottage. She and her residence won the Wilds Sipe Treasured Home Award at the Historic Aiken Foundation Preservation Awards ceremony. Sargent renovated the late 1800s house with help from friends and professionals. She watched YouTube tutorials and tackled bathrooms, kitchens, wallpaper, tile, and refinished floors, finding the work harder than expected.

The Adaptive Use Award honors Fusion Capital office while Leadership Award goes to Whitney Polo Field pavilion.
