Winter storm strands plains to coast with deadly ice
A sweeping winter storm across the Plains to the East caused multiple fatal wrecks and widespread travel disruption. At least 14 deaths were blamed on icy conditions in North Carolina Missouri Nebraska Kansas and West Virginia amid thousands of traffic incidents and airline delays. The National Weather Service warned the Northeast would face less severe impact than prior storms while North Carolina declared a state of emergency as the system moved east.
