Fired officer charged after ADPS firearm incident

State Law Enforcement Division charged former Aiken Department of Public Safety lieutenant Frank Conoly, a 21 year veteran, with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, malicious damage to property under $1,000 and simple assault for an Jan 3 off duty stop on Whiskey Road. Victims say he broke a car window and pepper sprayed them. Conoly was fired Jan 5 and NAACP involvement noted.

Utilities near finalized city agreement with two power firms

The city of Aiken has tentatively approved franchise deals with Aiken Electric Cooperative and South Carolina Electric and Gas Company. A second reading and public hearing are planned. The pact creates a joint service map for both utilities and allows build out in annexed areas. The city would keep a 5 percent franchise fee from Aiken Electric and may raise SCE&G’s to 5 percent, plus a half percent for undergrounding lines. A new spec building is planned at Ventures Industrial Park, with annexation support and potential financial aid for local projects.
