School Board Denies Conspiracy In Clark Firing

North Augusta High School teacher Jean Clar sues Aiken County School District officials over her dismissal. Local Voters Split on Aiken Economy Outlook

A USC Aiken Aiken Standard poll of 647 voters shows optimism fading with 38 percent predicting improvement, 32 percent for no change, and 19 percent for decline. Officials remain cautiously optimistic about growth in 1993 amid job gains from expansions and diversification in Aiken County.

Aiken City Council Approves 2.2 Million Bond for Recreation Complex

In a 4 3 vote the Aiken City Council approved issuing 2.2 million in general obligation bonds to finance a five field softball multi use complex on Pine Log Road and a gym at the H O Week Activities Center. The action raises city debt to 3 5 million under a 4.4 million cap. A second reading and public hearing set for Feb 8 with bonds to be sold in April.

Aiken Sears Largely Unaffected by National Cutbacks

Sears will close 100 stores and cut about 50 000 jobs nationwide but Aiken Mall's Sears remains open. Manager Walt Holland says Aiken is not part of the cutbacks and the 1993 spring Sears catalog will end after December with orders still accepted through then. Catalog operations in Aiken have been scaled back but no jobs will be lost locally.

Third Skeletal Remains Found At Shaws Creek

Investigators discover a third set of skeletal remains in the Shaws Creek area near Eureka on S C High 191. Tim Hoffman of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office says remains lack clothing and foul play is suspected. Coroner Sue Townsends will lead autopsy and investigation.

City Sets 500-Foot Rule for Video Poker Sites

The Aiken City Council unanimously approves a 500 foot distance rule for video poker businesses from churches schools or parks. The measure targets location in Neighborhood Business Planned Shopping Center Light Industrial and Suburban Industrial zones and uses lot line to lot line measurement unlike the states door based method.
