W R Grace & Co lawyers say they will appeal a Greenville federal jury verdict ordering $8.4 million in damages to the city of Green for asbestos containing fireproofing used in City Hall. The panel awarded $6.4 million in actual damages and $2 million in punitive damages. City officials plan multi year removal of asbestos at cost cited.
Drifting snow blocked roads in northern Michigan with 6 inches reported in Marquette and Sault Ste Marie as crews warned side streets were impassable. Wind chills plummeted in the Dakotas and Minnesota while a separate storm hit the Appalachians with freezing rain.

Ridge Spring resident Harvey Lott 26 died in Indiana. Arrangements by Davis Funeral Home. Lott, a Ridge Spring native and Ridge Spring Monetta HS basketball alumnus, worked for Senn Trucking. Survivors include wife Shirley Ann Jeffery Lott, a daughter Charlee, a son Della, parents Louie and Ruby Lott, four sisters and three brothers. Richard Jeffcoat 29 died in Lexington County. Funeral at Berlin Baptist Church near Wagener today at 3 p.m. Burial in church cemetery. Jeffcoat, a Kings Grove Baptist Church member and self employed construction worker, leaves wife Linda Diane and Linda Leigh, a son James Aaron, father Lee Jeffcoat, stepmother Salley Poole Jeffcoat, grandmother Mary Estell Jeffcoat, Pelion, sisters Linda Smith and Joanne Jeffcoat.
The Aiken Jaycees handed out awards to prominent locals including Warren and Linda Lucas for Family of the Year and Pat Scott for Outstanding Young Farmer. James Dickert and Paul M. Pridgen III received educator and religious leader honors, with Jim W. Hayes named Boss of the Year. Susan Burkhart earned the Distinguished Service Award. Ronnie Hair chaired the event.
