North Augusta forum to vet city council candidates

North Augusta residents can meet four Republican city council candidates Pat Carpenter Phillip Mottel Arthur Shealy and J Harry Weigle at a Feb 1 public forum. Moderator Richard Rogers will lead a three minute intro per candidate and four audience questions with a Q and A to follow. Mayor Lark Jones will present a State of the City address. The Feb 6 Republican primary runs 7 AM to 7 PM.

Aiken County Board Approves Policies and Grants

The Aiken County Board of Education approved key actions on Tuesday night including expulsion ratification under state law, adoption of the Character Education Policy, and a grant award from the Aiken County Association for Special Citizens to support local special education teachers. Three Teachers of the Year were introduced: Bonnie Patterson Linda Brown and Helen Garvin, plus a presentation by Jean Schwalbert on funding sound field amplification for classrooms.

Waste reduction focus of meeting in Aiken Rotary

Adam Burton reports that the Rotary Club of Aiken heard Bill Culler of the South Carolina Office of Solid Waste Recycling discuss state recycling efforts. He noted grants and technical support for local programs, a 25 percent goal and 30 percent landfill reduction, with current recycling rising to 42 percent while landfill input is 11 percent. The office allocates about 6 million dollars annually for curbside programs, funded by advance disposal fees averaging 12 million yearly. A Clemson grant supports asphalt rubber tire recycling research.

North Augusta High School eyes International Baccalaureate program

NAHS faculty have traveled to seminars in St. Petersburg Memphis and Vancouver to prepare for IB participation. Thirteen teachers will attend a January training in Sacramento as part of a six area curriculum. IB aims to grant university entry credentials and broaden electives with arts design music and computer science integrated into a global relevant program.

North Augusta High auditorium set for lighting and sound upgrades

North Augusta High School eyes a major renovation of its auditorium with lighting and sound system overhauls. Dr Nancy Smith and Mark Powers of the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council outlined a pre proposal plan with MusiCraft and Stage Front to upgrade equipment, wiring, and acoustics at an estimated 30 to 50 thousand dollars plus 20 thousand for electrical work. A gym sound system is also on the wish list to support athletics and events.
