Pleas Delay School Plan Decision Until Feb 14
The Aiken County Board of Education postponed a decision on a three year facilities plan worth about 23 million dollars. Three new elementary schools would be built in Areas 1 2 and 5 reducing total public schools from 42 to 34. A Good SRP Future Forecast By Dr. Oertel
Dr. Goetz Oertel told area reporters at a Q and A that Savannah River Plant safety and operations look strong. He said the three operating reactors show no imminent end of life and that NPR location decisions hinge on environmental impact statements for SRP sites. Locking Upgrade Advised for Aiken County Jail
Aiken County Council committee was urged to install a $135,000 remote locking system in 36 cells at the Aiken County Detention Center. Design consultant Steve Carter of Carter Global said current locks fail NFPA standards and that repairs plus added locks will not meet them. The plan, which may total $200,000 to $350,000, follows a November agreement with Southeastern Control Systems to repair and enhance the locks, with work paused pending a final decision. Continuous door slamming has damaged strike plates, and the remote system has been sought by jail officials.
