Mary Rettig Helstrom age 93 died today at Aiken Nursing Home after months of illness. A memorial service is set for Friday at 11 a.m. at George Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. George Lewis Smith. She served as an Army nurse in World War I in France and later worked at Robert Packer Hospital under Dr. Donald Guthrie. She lived in Aiken since 1973 and was active in the Senior Citizens Club and polo circles. Memorials to the Robert Packer Hospital Building Fund are requested.
David Gehrman of the Migrant Division described a broad range of services for migrant workers in Aiken including food transportation emergency medical aid and legal assistance. He noted migrant funds are year round unlike some agencies and that the office does not issue cash or checks.
The notice instructs all advance payments to be made to the Aiken Standard PBM Subscription, indicating the payee and payment method for future subscriptions.

Aiken youth Jack R. Durden Jr. was awarded $15,000 in a civil case against longtime friend Joe R. Worley after a judge and jury heard last year’s car crash relato. Worley, 19, sped at up to 120 mph on Richardson's Lake Road, crashed after a pursuit, and Durden was left unconscious. The jury awarded Durden a portion of a $175,000 suit after about an hour of deliberation.
Bids for Hopelands Lake came in with Parker-Sharpe Construction Co. of Augusta the low bidder at $65,000 while S&P Grading Co. of Aiken submitted $72,105.56. The city will review bids and may award the contract at a soon upcoming special council meeting.
Public Safety officers report five fire hydrants missing from a Whiskey Road construction site. Each hydrant worth 250 dollars. Director J Carrol Busbee says it is likely misplacement. Stanley Brown at the site reported the hydrants missing.
