This Violent Land draws on Freedmen's Bureau diary legacy
Leesville novelist Robert Johnson bases his first novel This Violent Land on William Stone's diaries from 1865 in South Carolina and his wartime service with the 19th Massachusetts. The book, published by Bright Mountain Press, uses journals and period articles to tell human stories from Reconstruction. An edition of Stone's journal is slated for University of South Carolina Press in October with a 30 page intro. The author aims a narrative rather than a history, highlighting personal experiences over broad analysis. A book signing is planned Friday February 22 in Aiken.
