Crowding at Aiken County Jail May Ease With New Facility

Aiken County Detention Center holds about 256 inmates though capacity tops 300. Maj. Dan Edwins notes crowding due to higher arrests by city and county agencies. Edgefield jail houses overflow inmates, with double and triple bunks and mattresses on floors. A new 356 bed Wire Road jail expected to open in about 90 days to relieve the strain.

Westinghouse USC partner on hydrogen fuel cell research

Park Avenue home saved as stove fire starts from child

Firefighters saved most of a Park Avenue house after a grease fire started when a child turned on a stove burner. The blaze, reported at 12:52 p.m., damaged the kitchen and rear of the home while all occupants escaped unharmed. The residence belonged to David Stinson and was occupied by Towanda Abney and family.
