People's Community Capital Corporation said net income for 2000 was $566,620 with 58 cents per share, and fourth quarter 2000 earnings of $163,413 or 17 cents per share. Total assets reached $618 million on December 31, 2000, up 13 percent from 1999. The bank holding company is based in Aiken.

Aiken Regional Medical Centers now offers two chronic pain procedures at the Pain Center spinal endoscopy and radiofrequency lesioning. Spinal endoscopy uses a fiberoptic scope to inspect the epidural space and inject medicine at a nerve root to relieve back pain and treat adhesions. Radiofrequency lesioning heats targeted nerve tissue to interrupt pain signals, addressing facet joint disease. Both are performed as same day outpatient surgeries with local anesthesia and mild sedation.

Man Arrested After Beer Thefts End With Empty Gas Tank
Aiken County deputies arrested 52 year old Tom Aaron Bennett of Laney Walker Boulevard after he grabbed two cases of Budweiser from a Beech Island convenience store. He fled in a 1979 GMC truck but ran out of gas, prompting a deputy and employee to intervene as the beers were returned to the store.

SRS hits landmark in cleanup milestone at A/M Area
The Westinghouse Savannah River Company reports the Savannah River Site has surpassed a milestone with more than four billion gallons of groundwater treated in the A/M Area. Project manager Chris Bergren notes ongoing work since 1985 with about 20 staff and no set end point, as treated water is redirected to streams feeding the Savannah River.
