Computer problems prevented publication of several regular items in the Aiken Standard this morning. Obituaries weather USC Aiken Cultural Series coverage and AMBUCS meeting notes were dropped with a plan to run them in tomorrow’s edition.
Aiken County school board approved issuing about 1.25 million dollars in bonds for school building and maintenance projects without raising taxes until 1990. Dr. Robert Paskel outlined methods including applying excess prior-year funds and using Education Improvement Act money to reduce debt service. The board also approved changes to elementary school orders and administrator evaluation forms along with a quality assessment report and capital improvement projects.
A Salley man identified as Thomas McGill, 79, died in a fire at his single story home off South Carolina 394. His wife Peggy McGill and Salley firefighters tried to reach him but were driven back by intense flames in the dining room.
President Reagan reaffirms that government is the problem and must be reduced in size and power. He calls for lower taxes, restraint on federal programs, and more role for local and private initiative while outlining a path to economic renewal and reduced deficits. He notes limited Soviet arms progress and maintains support for missile defense. The speech emphasizes self reliance, compassion via family and community, and a smaller federal footprint.
