State Sen. Carroll A. Campbell Jr. joined the Republican battle for the 4th District seat being vacated by Democrat James R. Mann. Greenville Mayor Max Heller and Rep. Nick A. Theodore, both from Greenville, also filed. Charles R. Hart of Travelers Rest previously announced. Campbell, 37, a Fountain Inn real estate businessman, has two House terms and later won a Senate seat after a failed bid for lieutenant governor in 1974.
Antiabortion activists led by March for Life president Nellie J. Gray march past the White House urging a constitutional amendment to outlaw abortion and protest the 1973 Supreme Court ruling. The event marks five years of protests since the decision on January 22, 1973, with about 100,000 participants anticipated.
