Detroit AP reports that automakers release mid January sales data the first under a new rebate program. Analysts expect a substantial upturn but warn the slump since World War II isn’t over. For Jan 11-20, expected totals are under 140,000 versus 155,004 a year ago. early January sales were the season’s slowest.
Sen. Ernest Hollings joined Sen Strom Thurmond in criticizing President Ford’s economic plan. Hollings warned the proposals would add about 80 billion dollars to the national debt in 18 months and raise costs on textiles and manmade fibers, harming foreign trade and the balance of payments.
In Bluffton Georgia a country store manager named Michael Mooney 41 and three other men were lined up behind a counter and shot with a high powered rifle during a late night robbery attempt. Mooney recently moved from Gainesville to run the service station grocery. He is the son of Col James K Mooney, Riv erside Military Academy superintendent. Officials withheld names of the other victims and barred newsmen from the scene. Sheriff James Hobbs said no further details were released.
A federal report by the EPA and DOT says implementing tougher 1977 emission rules would reduce auto mileage by about 10 percent in 1977 78 and 79, with full recovery by 1980 though effects linger into the 1980s. The findings contrast with Ralph Nader and FEA projections suggesting the 40 percent gain could still be reached.
A Montreal homicide investigator says the underworld plans to eliminate the killers of 13 people slain at a nightclub on Monday. He says mob members know who is responsible and aim to remove them to ease police pressure and set an example.
Washington AP reports a tentative agreement reached with the Sheet Metal Workers Union ending the threat of Friday strikes against Union Pacific and four other rail carriers. Other unions also reached tentative deals with the industry on three-year contracts increasing wages and benefits about 40 percent.
The market rose as traders chased a quick rebate prospect on 1974 income taxes and potential 1975 levy cuts. The Dow opened about one point higher while the NYSE showed a 5-2 edge for gainers amid Wednesday's late rally.
A Rich Plaza officer reports 10-4 at the Dinn-Wixie on police radio while Douglas R. Hall Sr. recovers from open heart surgery at University Hospital in Augusta. His wife Jeane, editor of the Aiken Standard Today pages, says he is doing well and drinking breakfast beverages but will stay in ICU two more days.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners delegated the decision to County Administrator Thomas F. Williams on whether to reopen bidding to all area dealers or renegotiate with Satcher Motor Co. for thirty five patrol cars. Bids must meet budget rules requiring at least three bids. Satcher was the sole bidder on a lease two years ago and remains the only bidder to meet lease terms, but they failed to meet carburetor and tire specs.
President Ford and Democratic leaders clash over new oil import tariffs with a plan to raise fees starting February 1. Congress plots a 90 day delay as Ullman argues the move hurts Americans and risks inflation. Ford vows to sign the declaration to force congressional action next week.
In Belvedere the trial of Connie Wesley McMilkey for driving under the influence proceeds with a seven women and five men jury. Patrolman Stapleton testified to the scene on Cherokee Drive and a strong odor of alcohol. Johnson had a forehead gash and bottles were found in the car. McMilkey pleaded guilty earlier this morning receiving a partially suspended sentence and probation.
The forecast calls for cloudy and cool conditions with a 60 percent chance of rain tonight and tomorrow. Daytime highs will reach the upper 50s, while tonight’s low settles around 42. Winds shift from variable to northeasterly 5 to 16 mph, increasing to 10 to 15 mph tomorrow.
Cecil Calvin Craig is charged with murder in the shotgun slaying of Henry Lee Cooper 33 in Langley. Cooper was shot in the head at 6 30 p m as he returned home with his wife and two step children witnesses say. Craig drove in behind Cooper and later surrendered at the sheriff s department after telling where the shotgun was located.
The coal strike empties shelves in Aiken with Colonial Ice and Fuel Co. out of coal. An employee says more may not arrive soon as most demand comes from local homeowners. Colonial last sold coal at 75 dollars a ton sourced from Virginia and Kentucky.
As hearings began on tax cut legislation, Altman said Ford refused a delay on the tariff. Treasury Secretary Simon defended the decision, saying it was correct to avoid more government rationing. Five of six New England governors sought a federal court order to block the tariff action, with heated regional concerns over heating oil costs. Meanwhile railroad unions reached tentative pacts to avert strikes, warning carriers will shut down without federal aid. Sen. Humphrey said the $12 billion 1974 tax rebate would not give a rapid economic boost.
