The Aiken Chamber of Commerce met at the Kirkland Park Hotel on Friday January 16 to discuss city improvements and advertising Aiken as a winter resort. Committees were named to work with City Council, and funds were approved to support the library and recruiting a photographer for eastern papers.
The article notes a forestry meeting at the Parish House of the Episcopal church with Henry H. Tryes speaking on conservation and a 40-slide film, free to the public, starting at 4:00 PM next Thursday. It also outlines wide fire losses in South Carolina, causes from grazing and absentee ownership, and fire damage to pine and hardwood forests with emphasis on longleaf pine and drought effects.
The Aiken Opera House hosts a Charleston sponsored chorus of fifty men and women presenting old negro plantation spirituals for the benefit of the Aiken Library. The lineup includes prominent plantation families and they emphasize preserving song heritage learned on plantations. Proceeds support the library building and endowment fund.
Members of the Aiken delegation in the General Assembly have received important committee assignments for the session. Senator John F. Williams, entering his 17th year in state politics, succeeds himself as chairman of the Judiciary in 1908 and later serves on Education. In the House S. B. Williams joins Ways and Means, Ashton Drummond sits on Judiciary, and W. Hamp Brodie takes on Agriculture, Education, Railroads, and Penitentiary.
County Commissioners opened bids for the first section of the Aiken Augusta highway. The three lowest bids were Thomas Hook of New Brookyn for 60,000, Lee Smith Venetrtion Co of Charlotte for 61,007.47 and Clewe and Johnson of Aiken for 61,181.75. Tasmas BE. Hops of New Brookys was awarded the contract, pending state approval. The route runs from Richland to Parker's Kaolin bed then to Langley Mills store, with a 30 day start window after final award.
Clarence W. Dolan has arrived in Niken and will shortly open his winter home.
The theatre could not hold the crowd last winter and hundreds were turned away. Orchestra and first two rows filled, with balcony seating priced at 2.00 for preferred seats and 1.50 for excellent balcony reservations, while balcony seats run 1.00.
The American Legion in South Carolina launches a state-wide drive hoping to enroll 15 000 ex servicemen. District officials and post leaders receive letters as prizes including railroad and Pullman fares to national and state conventions are announced for top individual and post gains.
The Aiken Kennel Club held its annual field trial at George Croft plantation with sixteen entries. Judges J W Patterson Frank Folk and Hudgens awarded top prizes to Mack owned by J L Cows and, second to Belle and third to Jack owned by R D Clowe. A large crowd attended a dinner at Shiloh Springs and discussion continued about merging with the Georgia Field Trial Association to hold future trials in Aiken. Dr E M Wilder, secretary of the Georgia association, noted potential national and international interest and substantial cash prizes.
The trial of Tittman Hickson and Artrude Stevens, both colored, for the murder of Wilson Stevens, consumed most of three days. The jury, led by Foreman J. Ler, included Mose Watson and others. Solicitor Carter opened for the State, with Smoak and Stansfield for the defense, Gunter assisting. The verdict was returned shortly after, with the case concluding around 4 p.m.
Rev. E. J. Jones, new Presiding Elder of the Columbia District, will preach at St John Methodist Church Sunday morning at 11 15. A conference will follow the morning service.
The 20 months old child of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Redd of Selvern died Friday morning January 9 from pneumonia. Funeral services were held at Bethear church with Rev. A. C. Baker leading at 11 o'clock Saturday. burial followed in the churchyard.
Myrtis Salley Drummond of Salley died Friday night after a long illness. She was widow of Benjamin W. Drummond of Williston and daughter of Captain Henry Salley. Survived by two sons Ashton Drummond and B W Drummond, one sister Mrs Cora Yoark, and three brothers Joan B Salley H H Salley and Charlie Salley.
