DOE works to win public support for nuclear waste disposal

Edward S. Goldberg of the Savannah River Plant told the Senior Men's Club that since the 1950s SRP has produced 68 million gallons of waste, reduced to 23 million gallons by evaporation. He outlined two waste forms, sludge and liquid, stored in plant tanks, and said the goal is a maintenance program requiring minimal human effort and eventual solidification for disposal in a government repository. The cesium in salt may have a commercial sewage use, and final design funds for an $800 million sludge facility could be requested in 1982 for operation by 1988. He urged renewed public confidence in the nuclear waste program.
