Snowbirds in the Yard Amid Harsh Winter Nights
A corny field note traces juncos known as snowbirds. Slate gray backs and white bellies, white tail tips aid ID. Cornell ornithologist, called Nanook of the North, found juncos huddle in dense shrubbery from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for warmth. The birds return to feeding grounds once food is found, rarely wandering far.
