Cooling therapy offers new hope after cardiac arrest
In Orlando Florida a 58 year old man, Andy Nelson, survived a cardiac arrest after a mowing accident thanks to induced therapeutic hypothermia. Doctors cooled his body to protect brain function for 24 hours and he recovered to resume work two months later. The method is new in the US though used in Europe, requiring intensive monitoring and muscle relaxants to prevent shivering.
