Fatal crash driver held in Augusta

Shayna Lively, 19, released from hospital, held at Richmond County Detention Center for a Jan. 11 crash on I-20 near Graniteville that killed Bernard Hearns, 31, and his two daughters Zainab, 1, and Imani K. Momodu, 3. Alcohol and drugs may have contributed. Lively faces three felony DUI counts with possible 1–25 year terms and fines up to 25,000 per count. extradition to South Carolina being arranged.

Pine Log road widening project begins on east side

The Pine Log Road widening and rerouting project has started on the citys east side. The two lane road will be expanded to four lanes with a center turn lane and raised to railroad level along US 78 over about two and a half years. The project ties to the proposed 118 bypass, though it is separate, and aims to reduce truck traffic on Richland Avenue. The current work runs from South Aiken Boulevard near Kennedy Middle School to the SC 4 and SC 302 intersection.

Hodges bets on gambling to fund plans

Aiken County senators gave Gov. Jim Hodges mixed grades on his State of the State speech. They praised education focus and parental accountability but questioned funding ideas, urging growth in state revenues and differing on gambling timing and methods, including a video poker referendum and tax approach.

Gov Hodges proposes massive education and state employee boosts

Governor Hodges outlines more than 231 million in new education dollars including 312.8 million for teachers above the Southeastern average, 49 million to cut class sizes, 200 million for a First Steps program, 125 million for infrastructure, and 25 million for laptops, contingent on video gambling tax increases. Also calls for a state drug court, informal measures on background checks for licenses, a reduced income tax exemption for seniors, partial 401 k matches for workers, a 3 percent raise for state employees, and a plan to rejoin the Southeast Compact with timing on the Barnwell landfill.
