In Austin Minnesota the National Guard inspected the Hormel plant as strikes disrupted access and traffic. A union leader derided the company while the mayor and striker cited public safety as guards were mobilized by Governor Perpich after officials requested help.
Mack Truck Inc plans an $80 million manufacturing plant on a 153acre Winnsboro Industrial Park site in Fairfield County. If built, up to 1200 workers would be hired, with tax and road incentives offered to attract the project amid county unemployment at 8.3 percent. Local unions elsewhere push for concessions. Mack notes no comment on negotiations.
State indicators released by the University of South Carolina and the Employment Security Commission show unemployment easing for the first time in four months. The November unadjusted rate stood at 7.3 percent with a 7.5 percent adjusted rate, as 13 of 16 indicators rose and the Leading Indicators index jumped 4.3 percent.
