In 1871 Aiken becomes a county seat on the nation’s first railroad line. A famous writer visits the village and recaps its early history, describing the town and its development through that year for the Sesquicentennial edition of the Aiken Standard to be published April 30.
Aiken marks its 150th birthday with a May 3 to 12 celebration and volunteers are needed across committees. Roles include Revenue Division, Women's and Men's Participation, First Lady Contest, Tickets, Historical Show, Publicity, Special Events, Office, and Student Activities. Aiken brother and sister Allen Valentine Jr. 19 and Cynthia T. Valentine 21 died in a one car crash that struck a tree and caught fire about 3 30 a m early yesterday. Deputy coroner Ear nest Moore said Valentine apparently fell asleep at the wheel.
Last night recorded the coldest January temperature. Tonight will be bitterly cold with a low in the low teens. Tomorrow warms to around 40 with sunny skies. Wednesday and Thursday look fair, Friday turns mostly cloudy with a chance of precipitation. Highs reach 40s to 50s and lows hover in the upper 20s to low 30s.
South Carolinians stocked up on food medicine and fuel as an Alberta Clipper chilled the state from coast to mountains. Charleston's low reached 18 with a 14 below wind chill, while Greer recorded 4 below and Columbia hit 5 before plunging to near zero. Forecasters warned of more zero to 10 degree lows and 30s by Tuesday. Crews worked to restore power as arctic air persisted.
Overnight cold pushed record lows at Bush Field and caused power outages in Jackson area. Despite spotty heat problems, all Aiken County schools opened with students moved to gyms and cafeterias. About 30 of 240 buses failed to start due to frozen gear boxes as cars faced frozen radiators and dead batteries.
A record crowd of about 500 rose for the Aiken Chamber of Commerce Man Woman and Youth of the Year awards at a South Aiken High School dinner. James D. McNair was named Man of the Year, Ola Hitt Woman of the Year, and Marshall Taylor Youth of the Year. McNair, a 38 year banking veteran, retired from C&S Bank after leading Farmers and Merchants Bank before its merger.
President Reagan shifts inaugural events indoors due to Washington wind chills 50 below. The outdoor parade and many spectators are canceled, with a Rotunda swearing in for Congress, Cabinet, Supreme Court justices, governors, and diplomats.
