An electrical short is suspected of starting a fire that heavily damaged the Aiken County Courthouse Annex. Damage estimates reach 150000 dollars or more as an adjuster from the General Services Administration surveys the scene. Three ADPS officers suffered smoke inhalation but were treated and released. Fire response included five engines and about 50 personnel. The first floor housed federal and extension offices and the annex may relocate to a new federal building on York. The courthouse building was completed in the 19th century with modernization plans discussed by the chamber of commerce.
