Meeting to press on teen bus driver ban in SC

North Augusta resident Roy Williams, whose son was killed by a 17 year old bus driver in 1986, will help lead a Charleston gathering Saturday at 2 p.m. at North Charleston City Hall. Donna Gaetano, mother of a child run over by a teen driver, will join a press conference.

Sumter Man Charged With Four Murders

Phillip Johnson, 23, of Sumter was charged with four murders tied to a 14 month period. Officials from the State Law Enforcement Division said they will not reveal exact connections but noted the deaths occurred in the same general area. Johnson was arrested Monday and held in the Sumter County jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Inflation Up 4.4 Percent in 1987 Driven by Energy Costs

U.S. consumer prices rose 4.4 percent in 1987, the fastest 12 month pace in six years, led by energy costs and higher services prices. December CPI up 0.1 percent, marking the smallest monthly gain since July 1986, while gasoline and heating oil surged earlier in the year.

Contra leaders cautiously accepted Daniel Ortega's offer of face to face peace talks but called it a ploy to cut U S aid to rebels. Storm system brings tornadoes and heavy snow workers stranded

A huge storm system swept into the Great Lakes after spawning tornadoes that killed five in the South and stranded motorists in the Plains. Snow up to 14 feet high driven by cold air and gusty winds caused widespread closures and at least 27 deaths this week.

Nine Survive Plane Crash In Colorado

A commuter airliner crashed near Durango Colorado killing eight of the 17 aboard while nine survivors were rushed to Mercy Medical Center. Two trapped passengers died in the wreckage later. Rescue crews tracked a walking survivor through three feet of snow as delays arose from circular footprints. The Denver to Durango flight had two crew members and 15 passengers on board. The twin engine turboprop went down about 7 30 p m ten miles east of Durango near Bayfield. Skies were overcast with fresh snowfall in a region already buried under heavy snow.

Lake name change foes urge keeping Clarks Hill intact

Opponents of renaming Clarks Hill Lake after Senator Thurmond urged preserving the current name and proposed renaming the dam and U.S. 221 instead. Representative Butler Derrick considered the alternative as a Citizens group pressed for public input, with local meetings in North Augusta, Aiken, and Jackson.
