Washington AP reports President Nixon limits public duties for his one year in office. He focuses on relief to Nigeria and Asia trip results while delaying a State of the Union until Thursday. A private Blair House dinner marks the anniversary as Republicans stage a ball he skips.
In Niagara Falls New York an unidentified woman reported to police that two ambulances six taxi cabs and a pizza restaurant delivery bay arrived at her home Monday morning she questioned who would order a pizza at 10 o'clock.
An anonymous caller warned Tokyo police that the U S Embassy would be bombed. Reinforcements were deployed to the embassy and other U S installations in downtown Tokyo. No explosions occurred by afternoon, and extra guards were withdrawn.
An 18 year old student in Lille doused himself with gasoline on a high school sports field and set fire to himself. Robert Gerevens died a few hours later becoming the second student to burn himself to death in four days. He left a letter blaming wars and the madness of men. The earlier victim had spoken of a large fire in the school courtyard for Biafra before his own death.
Washington AP reports a clash among American Trans World and United as they file with the Civil Aeronautics Board on cocktail limits. The carriers seek to cap spirits at four ounces per passenger per flight, two two ounce drinks, amid jet era competition.
The Democratic National Committee plans a February 5 fund raising gala in Miami Beach with attendees from across the country. Members of the National Democratic Sponsors Club contribute at least 1000 per couple, with individual tickets from 100, and events were also planned in Philadelphia Florence Little Rock and Charlotte. In addition, later fundraisers were anticipated in Washington New York Cleveland and other cities. U S forces killed 234 North Vietnamese in a three mile from the Cambodian border clearing. The attack near the Bu Dap Special Forces camp north of Saigon involved two battalions and was the largest strike since June. Casualties to Americans were negligible.
