U.S. Cancer Deaths Fall Again as Trends Grow

Cancer deaths in the United States dropped for the second year in a row, to 553,888 in 2004, a 0.5 percent decline. Experts credit reduced smoking, earlier detection, and better treatment for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, with officials noting a continuing downward trend.

Cancer deaths fall again as screenings rise nationwide

The one percent yearly decline in cancer deaths continues for the second straight year, offsetting aging and population growth. Colorectal cancer led the drop with 1,110 fewer male and 1,094 fewer female deaths, aided by increased colonoscopy screening and the so called Katie Couric effect.

Napoleon death reattributed to stomach cancer not poisoning

New analysis of Napoleon Bonaparte's 1821 autopsy supports stomach cancer as the cause of death, with a four inch gastric tumor and signs of massive internal bleeding. Researchers say arsenic poisoning is unlikely though not completely ruled out, noting modern cases rarely match the cancer scenario. The study spotlights cancer over poisoning in Napoleon's final illness on St Helena.
