Heavy winds spark brush fires across South Carolina

Statewide brush fires surged Tuesday as strong winds swept across South Carolina. Forester Ken Cabe notes January signals start of the forest fire season, with most fires driven by human activity. In Aiken, fires included a rekindled weekend blaze and a downed power line fire threatening homes, which were contained with fire breaks. No major structures burned. power was cut to several homes to aid the response.

Community remembers Kasten and Kotz in vigil near North Augusta

A candlelit service at Christ Baptist Church near North Augusta gathered Tuesday to honor Bobby Kasten, 15, and Bobby Kotz, 18, who died in a weekend wreck on Big Oak Drive in Edgefield County. Friends recalled their outgoing spirits and humor as youth from True North Church and North Augusta High School shared memories.

Third attorney appointed to lead defense for Atkins murder case

James Huff of North Augusta agreed to lead defense for Robert F Atkins in the August 2000 murder of 17 year old Jessica Carpenter after former attorney John Delgado recused himself. Huff becomes the second local attorney named in the case alongside Diana Holt, with previous appointments dating to March 2003 and a recusal over a conflict of interest.
