The Jaycees crowned Tom Maurice as Boss of the Year for 1978 after years of attendance at the annual awards dinner. Maurice quipped he keeps coming back, while his son Stew noted he was the guest of honor. The event featured Mills Fitzner covering the ceremony and Richard Freeman announcing the DSA winner.
The Aiken County Council, in a special work session, approved allocating additional funds for Public Defender John W Harte Jr and staff to align with state law. Harte cited 1977 caseloads and proposed pro rated back pay, and suggested using Steven L Green to pre screen indigent defense cases to ensure eligible payouts.
Maurice and Fitzner were honored at a Jaycees banquet in Aiken with Boss of the Year and Distinguished Service Award. The FBI released a half ton of JFK assassination records totaling 58 754 pages. Four news groups paying 10 cents a page received the material under the Freedom of Information Act requests. Anyone else may obtain the documents at the same rate.
The Rev Henry Summerall Jr will become rector of All Saints Anglican Church in Aiken starting January 29. Aiken native, city attorney, and senior partner will continue legal practice. He previously served at Christ Church Greenville St Thaddeus Aiken and Holy Cross Simpsonville and joins the Diocese of the Southeast. Sunday service time changes to 11 am for now with Holy Communion on the first three Sundays and morning prayer on the fourth.
