Aiken Adopts Citywide Character Initiative

In 1999 Aiken became the first South Carolina city to join the national Character First program. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh led the effort with City Council and local groups including East Aiken Elementary and the Joint Women's Clubs, promoting monthly traits from 49 options. The program spreads through schools, banners, annual Celebrations of Character, and monthly city employee trainings, with about 2,900 youth nominated over a decade. The first character training breakfast is set for January 27 at the City Municipal Conference Center.
