Aiken Voters Split Over Tax Rates And School Funding
About 80 percent of Aiken County taxpayers in the Aiken Standard USC Aiken poll say high taxes are a definite problem yet last year’s poll showed willingness to raise taxes if funds were for schools. Auditor Newsome notes a low millage rate but a 35 percent reassessment jump since 1982. Mills detail allocations to schools and colleges, with limited funds for county government. Kathy Williams of the SC Association of Counties comments on comparability.
